“WHO GETS TO WRITE THE STORY?”

Play Type: Two Person Drama, Fantasy

Characters: ALIYAH, a young Black enchantress in love with music and plant magic, and LILY, an adventurous young white quester.

Play begins with ALIYAH offstage and LILY appearing to “pull herself together” in preparation for a confrontation. After a long breath, she knocks on a door loudly (can be substituted with a wall).

ALIYAH, wearing headphones, enters, smiling. She takes off her headphones.

ALIYAH: Hey, can I help y-

LILY interrupts, putting her hands on her hips: I’m with the Northern Area Quest League and I’m looking for the Black Witch of the Northwest Village. I was told she was hiding out right here in this house and it’s my duty as a quester to protect the village from harm.

ALIYAH tilts her head, confused.

ALIYAH: Uh, I’m the Black Witch and... I’m not hiding out, this is my house. And protect from harm? Why do you assume I did something?

LILY: Because you’re the Black...Witch? And Black witches perform...evil magic?

ALIYAH: Who told you that?

LILY scratches her neck.

LILY: Well, I was told there was a Black witch around here and that black stuff is the bad vibes kinda magic, ya know?

ALIYAH: I’m the Black Witch because I’m Black and I call my magic plant based natural hair care company “Black and Body Works.” Think about who gets to choose why darkness is evil and why whiteness is good. I’m betting they taught you white magic is the good stuff at the Quester Academy, right?

LILY:...yeah?

ALIYAH: Maybe read some spell books written by Black magic folk or ask why the Quester Academy has very few Black Quester trainers?

ALIYAH slams the door shut.

LILY, nodding slowly: Yeah, will do. Sorry to bother you.
